Nineteen-year-old Hideki Motosuwa is living on his own while studying to get into college after failing the entrance exam. Persocoms, a type of robot are a normal sight, but Hideki is far too poor to afford one. He finds one thrown in the trash and brings it home with him. When he turns her on, she is only capable of saying "Chi" so that is what Hideki names her. He takes it upon himself to take care of her, teach her, and eventually, love her.
