Lydia, a fairy doctor, gets a letter from her father to meet him in London. As a fairy doctor, Lydia can see fairies, which most people no longer believe in, and works as a liason between the fairy realm and the human realm. As she is going to board the ship to London, she is escorted by Mr. Huskley. When taken to her room, she hears someone else and finds an injured man matching the description of a larcenist that Nico, her fairy-cat companion, had read about in the paper. He claims that Mr. Huskley had put him in such a state, and is planning to hold Lydia captive. Lydia sees that there is a trip wire outside her door, and so she agrees to go with the stranger and escape. After a chase and reaching a safe point, Lydia awakens to find herself on another ship. His name is Edgar and he claims to be a descendant of the Blue Earl, the head of the fairy realm and one who holds power in the human realm as well. He confesses that he had always planned to get her on the boat, as many are vying for her ability to communicate with fairies to take possession of the Sword of Merrow, an heirloom passed down the Blue Earl line. This includes Mr. Huskley, who wants the gem within the sword.
