    Define Romance

I didn't know where to put this thread sorry so i just put it in this sub-forum thingie. Basically, i just want to know what everybodies interpretation of a romantic anime. In my opinion it has to have intimacy, relationships, dating and more.
I dislike the romance animes that just do the build ups then at the end the two characters say i love you to each other. I love the build ups but only when it shows the after parts aswell. Anyway i just wanted to find out what makes an anime romantic for you guys.

It should probably be under Romance Anime: http://www.romanceanime.com/forum/fo...-Romance-Anime

Also, the thread title should probably be "Define Romance Anime." I figured this thread was going to be about defining what romance is, similar to the "What is Love?" thread.

In answer to the question, there are lots of animes out there that have romantic subplots. It's not the main focus, but people fall in love, maybe even kiss at some point. A lot of action and fantasy anime have something like that. It's more rare to find something where the main plot is nothing but the romance. And even though many manga go beyond when the couple gets together, a lot of the time the anime version of it will finish at that point (Like with Suzuka. The anime stops where they sort of admit they both have feelings for each other, and the manga goes on way way after that).

hm. A romance anime should have a developed relationship , as you said, not just "I love you" but indeed have a little of action over here and there.

sadly, not many animes do that.

Mars (Never made into an anime, but one of the best romantic manga out there. The story continues long after they get together.)

Nana (Really intense. A bit depressing at times, but truly excellent character development. Focuses on other drama relationships besides romance. There is an anime. And it is very good, but the manga continues where the anime stops. I recommend watching the anime, and then continuing with the manga.)

Marmalade Boy (Cute, well done shoujo romance. There is an anime for it, but they changed a lot in the anime. The manga is better.)

Lovely Complex (I recommended this to you in your anime recommendation thread, but the manga for this is even better. A decent amount of the story was cut out of the anime. Especially a lot of what happens after they get together.)

Kare Kano (There was an anime adaptation of this, but the manga continues the story much farther.)

Peach Girl (Made into an anime that was mostly accurate... but the animation was low budget, and they changed certain parts of the story to make it more appropriate for children. Manga is better, but anime is still good. Romance continues after the couple gets together.)

High School Debut/Koukou Debut (No anime version. Very cute romantic comedy shoujo that continues after they get together.)

Suzuka (Shonen romance told in the male point of view. There is an anime version that is good, and accurate to the manga, but it stops when they admit they have feelings for each other. You'd have to read the manga to see what happens after they get together.)

LOL... See, I'm not a 'romance anime' fan as much as the rest but sort of require it to be a sub-genre of the anime. This means that the anime I watch list 'romance' as a genre but it is not necessarily the main genre. It seems strange to me to make a separate definition for 'Romance Anime' separate from just the general 'genre' of Romance anime which allows for just build up and end it type of anime... IDK. I think you can consider it maybe something like 'Hard Romance' as a sub-genre of the 'Romance' genre, but I don't think anime which stop once the two characters realize their feelings aren't Romance Anime.

    Here's my definitions:
An anime/manga is in the 'Romance Genre' if it has characters dating, hooking up, falling in love, and/or flirting multiple times throughout the anime/manga.
An anime/manga is a 'Romance Anime/Manga' if the focus of the story depends upon and needs it's details from the characters dating, hooking up, falling in love, and/or flirting occurs frequently throughout the anime/manga.
An anime/manga is a 'Hard Romance Anime/Manga' if the characters go steady for a plurality of the anime.

Now the word 'hard' in 'Hard Romance Anime' could be substituted for any other word of similar idea... like 'serious' or 'steady'... I just called it 'hard' similar to the way there is science fiction and then there is 'Hard science fiction' as a sub-genre (which is the accepted terminology for science-fiction which needs the technical details for events and scientific claims it makes). Seeing as our website is prominent on the google search, should we transform that idea into a contiguous ideology and we use it when evaluating discussing anime, it could become an accepted term, therefore if we wish to use a phrase like "Steady Romance Anime/Manga" for this type it is worthwhile to discuss what everyone prefers.
